About Ulytau

Kazakh band ULYTAU ("The Great Mountain") is a genuine break in modern instrumental music. It is quite difficult nowadays to name a band which with the same enthusiasm and drive, which would perform ethno music (and also popular classic) in hard and pop-rock mixture. We usually associate The Kazakh culture with vociferous national professional singers, wise "akins", or even modern operas, ballets and oratorios... Up until now, popular instrumental art there has not been widespread.
Artists from ULYTAU have excellently filled this blank in the Kazakh culture. They are as equally keen or distinguished cover-versions of classical themes of Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart, as on their own - rather condensed on sounding-dramatically associated opuses. One can sense the impulses of a steppe wind, the smell of a grass burnt by the sun, the pride pace of graceful trotters, a strict look of aksakals (wise old kazakh men), bewitching secret of ceremonial rituals...
